Round hiking trail to the “Schönen Aussicht“ (Beautiful View)

Parking and hiking

For those who would like to sniff a bit of mountain air during their visit to Hallstatt, we would like to recommend the family-friendly walk to the “Schönen Aussicht“ (Beautiful View). Not just for photographers!

MountainViews

We begin our approximately 45-minute tour at the P1 car park. From here, the route leads us about 5 minutes along the main road (L547) in the direction of Obertraun to the south. After a stone wall, we turn right at a lookout bench over a few steps. In several serpentines it goes 20 minutes uphill through the forest about. At our feet we can see the crystal-clear Lake Hallstatt sparkling through the leaves and, in places gives us the view of Obertraun - on the other side of the lake.

Onto “Geisserbankerl“

Once at the top we follow the path slightly ascending for 3 minutes to the “Schönen Aussicht“. (beautiful view). This very special place is also known by the locals as “Geisserbankerl”. Because in days gone by a shepherd sat here and looked after the numerous small animals like goats (Geiss) or sheep.

Hallstatt from above

Now it's time to pull out the camera or the smartphone, because up here you have a wonderful view of Hallstatt, the lake and the impressive mountains on the southern shore of the fjord-like lake.

Downhill to a gem

The way back to the end of our short tour takes us downhill for about 15 minutes down numerous steps down to the Hallstatt Calvary. If you have weak knees then we would recommend trekking poles for this part. The small Calvary church was built by a salt trader for his workers, who once lived in the opposite, so-called "Amtshaus". The 97 steps take you back to the end of our 45-minute hike to the P1 car park.

Our tip: The small fine circular tour is also suitable for all visitors who have parked their cars in the P3 or P4 car parks. The detour over “Geisserbankel” will be the culmination of your Hallstatt visit.

Safety on the rock face

In recent years rock climbing has developed encouragingly strong and each year inspires more and more people. Its versatility means you get a taste of everything: whether hard tracks in the Boulder room or indoor climbing hall, long routes with alpine ambience or leisurely tours on a sunny cliff - in climbing, regardless of age, everyone finds their individual conditions. Safety guidelines play an important role in enabling you to enjoy this fascination to the full. The best advice for "correct" climbing in the Salzkammergut region can be found here.
